PHENOMENA OF SMOKING BEHAVIOR IN THE SOCIETY OF KODINGARENG ISLAND IN MAKASSAR CITY

Abstract


ABSTRACT

 

Background: The problem of smoking behavior is very worrying, Smoking or inhaling cigarette smoke is one of the risk factors that trigger the emergence of health problems such as NCDs (Non-Communicable Diseases), namely hypertension, heart disease, cancer, respiratory infections are increasingly high in the State- developing country. The purpose of this study is to explore the problem of smoking behavior in the island community. This study was carried out on Kodingareng Island, Sangkarrang District, Makassar City.

Research Method: qualitative with phenomenology approach. There were 15 informants, consisting of 3 women and 12 men. People 10 people, Head RW 4 people, Health Promotion Officer Puskesmas Kodingareng 1 person.

Results: This study shows that the people of Kodingareng Island, almost all of whom work as fishermen, make cigarettes a tool used to ward off coldness while in the sea, whereas for large fishermen who employ several people on their ships provide daily rations of cigarettes 1 pack to his men both teenagers and adults as a condition for them to go to work on the ship. So it is this that also causes hypertension and respiratory infections in the top ten diseases in Kodingareng Island.

Conclusion: smoking in the island community is not only a habit but also serves as a tool that helps them when in the sea to overcome the cold. Suggestion to do research related to model of behavior control of special smoking for society in archipelago region.
