Characteristics Of Hajj Pilgrims From Surabaya Embarkation Who Died In 2015

Abstract


Background: Hajj is one of worship that is at risk of high morbidity and mortality rate. This has become a concern and challenge for Indonesia, which is predominantly Muslim. Data from 2014 to 2016 shows that the highest death rate for Indonesian pilgrims occurs in 2015. The purpose of this study is to describe characteristics of hajj pilgrims from Surabaya Embarkation who died in 2015.

Materials and methods: Type of this study is a descriptive study, by used secondary data from SISKOHATKES of Port Health Office Surabaya. The research data collected on all hajj pilgrims from Surabaya Embarkation who died in 2015.

Results: The results of this study showed that out of 28.169 hajj pilgrims from Surabaya Embarkation in 2015, 129 pilgrims who died were analyzed. The result of analysis showed that the characteristics of hajj pilgrims were the men more than women (57.4%). Most of the deceased pilgrims were in ≥60-years old (65.9%), which included high-risk health status. The most common cause of death is cardiovascular disease (38.8%). Based on the location of death, most of pilgrims died outside the health facilities (lodgings, mosques, airplanes, trips and others) (62%).

 

Conclusions: The findings of this study may coach the hajj pilgrims long before departure by emphasizing promotive and preventive efforts, especially early diagnosis and controlling risk factor for non communicable desease.
