ASSOCIATION BETWEEN EARLY INITIATION WITH PRELACTEAL FEEDING PRACTICE TO NEWBORN IN WORKING AREA OF AIR DINGIN PRIMARY HEALTH CENTER 2017

Abstract


Background

Prelacteal feeding practice define as administration of food/drink despite of breastmilk without indication to newborn. Prelacteal feeding can affect newborn health and decrease percentage of exclusive breastfeeding. Labor history can affect prelacteal feeding. Labor history are type of delivery, early initiation of breastfeeding (EIB) and rooming in Labor history can affect prelacteal feeding. Materials and methods

This study was a quantitative study with cross sectional design conducted at Air Dingin health center from November 2016 to October 2017. There were 73 mothers with 0-12 month babies became sample of this study. Data collected by using questionnaire. Data will analyzed in univariate and bivariate by using chi-square analysis (p<0,05)

Results

The results showed that 63% of mothers administrated prelacteal feeding to their babies. The result of chi-square analysis revealed p-value between type of delivery (p=0,636), early initiation of breastfeeding (EIB)(p=0,000) and rooming in (p=0,034).

Conclusions

There was an association between EIB and rooming in with prelacteal feeding practices. Need to increase commitment of health workers on implementing EIB and rooming in on any type of delivery.
