Association Between Low Birth Weight and 6-8 Month Age with Anemia among 0 – 23 Months Old Children in Sambas District: Indonesia Borderland Area

Abstract


Background

Based on Riskesdas 2013, the prevalence of anemia among children 12–59 months was 28,1%. Anemia in early stages of life has been linked to serious consequences on the growth and children development. Therefore, anemia prevalence monitoring is crucial. Unfortunately, there is no data about the prevalence of anemia among under two especially in borderland area of Indonesia, like Sambas district, West Kalimantan. The aim of this study is to assess the association between low birth weight and 6-8 months age with anemia among 0-23 months old children in Sambas District.

Materials and methods

A cross-sectional study was conducted from April 28 to May 12, 2016. Children biodata, birth history, hemoglobin concentration and anthropometric measurement among children aged 0–23 months were assessed. Anemia status was determined using hemoglobin level (<11.0 g/dl).

Results

A total of 658 children were identified, 72.0% was anemia. Low birth weight and age 6-8 months are associated with anemia among children. Children with low birth weight history has 2.7 times higher risk to get anemia (OR 2.779; 95% CI 1.196- 6.456), and children age 6-8 months has 3.1 times higher risk to get anemia (OR 3.134, 95% CI 1.654-5.940).

Conclusions

Anemia prevalence among 0-23 months old children in Sambas district was classified as severe public health problem. It may rise negative impact on the future development of the children. Multisector program is needed to overcome this problem.
